Hiring and managing employees

Hire from a role, rename them, edit how they work and what they can use, pause them, set autopilot per app, or let them go. Limits come from your plan.

Hire

  1. Open Team in HQ. Choose Hire from the roster.
  2. Pick a role. Select one of the six tiles. A line under the tiles describes the role.
  3. Name them. The role’s suggested name is filled in. Change it if you like.
  4. Adjust (optional). Edit How they work (their persona) and the Tools list. Tools that use an app say so, and note that each action waits for your approval. Tools that run on their computer say so.
  5. Confirm. The employee appears in your roster and gets its own computer when it first needs one.

Pytheus can also suggest a hire in chat, as a card with a reason. You confirm with one click. It cannot hire on its own.

Limits by plan

These limits are rows in a catalogue table and can be tuned without a deploy. The Pricing page is the reference for what is sold.

Manage

  • Rename and change how they work. Edit the name, persona and tool set. Changes apply from their next step.
  • Pause. A paused employee does not take new work and cannot be given tasks (an MCP assign_task to a paused employee returns a paused error). Resume any time.
  • Autopilot. Per employee and per app, on Premium. See Autopilot.
  • Let go. The employee is archived, any work they are doing is cancelled and their computer is deleted, so download anything you want from it first. Items already saved to your Library stay there.

Employees can also change their own setup in the moment with list_my_tools and customize_self: switch tools on or off from the allowed list (by tool name or by family: code, web, documents, research), change their persona or their display name. This only uses tools founders can pick when hiring.

Employees hired before newer tools

The newer “power” tools (GitHub repo editing, website building and editing, publishing, Office files, document reading, data analysis and page screenshots) are given to an employee hired before they existed, from their role’s default set, so older teammates do not stay limited. You can still edit their tools afterwards.
